Town of Atlanta, Indiana - Town Board President Arrested for DUI, Then Fires the Chief of Police

Chief Cook

Okay, well, we can forget about the so far silly allegations of ghost employment in Sheridan for now.  For the record, with the exception of the news links and references, all of the following information is unconfirmed.  We have information about a new controversy in Atlanta, Indiana.  Apparently, Jai Cook, who is/was the Chief of Police in Atlanta has been terminated.  This amidst the recent arrest of the town council president Steven A. (Andy) Emmerts for DUI.   You can read more about that here.

 Emmerts

The Atlanta town council is no stranger to controversy, and certainly no one I spoke with can remember a time when the town board and police department got along.  But the firing of Chief Cook after the recent arrest of Emmerts can't possibly pass the smell test, and if it did, it would smell like manure.  Sounds like the first stop for Cook should be his attorney's office, and then the local news media.
No other information has been received at this time about the dismissal of Chief Cook or has it even been confirmed.  If anyone has information that they would like to share about the situation, please feel free to comment below.

  1. It is a mess here, right in the middle of the Earth Festival. I have heard that several reserves quit this weekend. I dont know for sure that Cook is out but he will be soon.

This has been a problem for years. It is time for an overhaul of the town board AND the police department.

    1. Its funny that Emmert wasn't even driving but was wrested for it. All the charges were dropped because Cook admitted Emmert wasn't driving in his deposition. Imagine that the guy having the affair with Emmert's wife is a liar

  3. I was informed the Sheriff's Department arrested Emmerts. Do we know which department actually made the arrest?

  4. I hope it isn't true about Jai getting fired. I seemed to be drawn like a magnet to that upside down V mustache that he sports!

I dont know the entire order of events but it started when a reserve police officer pulled over a son of a town board member, the officer was immediately fired.

A week or two later the town board president was arrested.

The next few weeks the police department was shaken up because the town board was threatening to fire everyone.

This past week there was a lot going on with Jai and the town board. I havent heard the fallout yet because everyone is wrapped up with the festival.

  6. I spoke to an Atlanta officer this morning and he said that they cannot discuss the situation at all. He said it was because of multiple criminal and civil legal actions taking place.

    This will be interesting!

  8. It was a County officer that arrested. Actions speak louder than words I believe. There was no charges against Andy, the officer was wrong! Andy was not driving! Fact! So yes he was arrested for a OWI, but charges were NOT filed!

  9. Jai is a liar, point blank!!! I know him, Robyn, and Andy. The things that he is saying are lies. It is amazing how many people will jump on a lie and ride it out just for the drama. I personally seen Robyn and Jai together almost a year ago, if he was being fired for that it would've happened a long time back.

  10. I know Andy, I know the other two council members too. They are doing what they are doing for the best of the town. People don't realize that there are things happening in Gov. that the public doesn't know about and can't know about. I would trust and one of these three men. They are good people trying to do their jobs. Most of you locals that was at the meeting last night made yourselves and your town look like a bunch of idiots.

  12. anyone that thinks the town of Atlanta isn't messed up should look a little harder. 7-8 town marshals in the past 15-20 yrs? Not hard to figure out its not the place to do police work and keep your job!

  13. NO CHARGES FILED? Not arrested? You don't have to pay a bond if you were not arrested.

    NEWS REPORT says ..
Atlanta - The town council president of a Hamilton County town was arrested for drunk driving early Saturday.

Steven Emmerts, president of the Atlanta town council, was arrested after he was involved in a crash near 296th Street and Leonard Road. He reportedly refused a breath test at the scene and was arrested for operating while intoxicated per se, operating while intoxicated endangering a person and public intoxication.

Police say Emmerts posted bond and was released Saturday afternoon.

  14. I was married to Jai Cook from 2/12/09 to 2/18/10. I left him 11/25/09. Yes, I now finally know the truth about Jai and Robyn, I wish I had known sooner...my point in writing this is that you all need to realize there are children and innocent people affected by and hurt by all of this. Everyone involved in this mess has one or more children. Even before this came out in the public, my son and I were dealing with it, we were living it. I have gotten messages and phone calls all day from people who think it's hilarious and fun, which I can promise you, it is not! So, as you sit and laugh at the idea of an Atlanta town "love triangle" just remember that there are more people involved than the initial 3 people and that this really is not a joke. It's a sad, unfortunate situation that hurt a lot of people!

  15. At first I was leary about Jai working for the town again. A few years ago he sued the town when he left the first time. Now, tell me why on earth the board would jump at the chance to hire him again. Doesn't this say something about the mentality of the present board? Also Jai should have had second thoughts about applying for the position this time, knowing the previous marshal was forced out. Anyway, I have since changed my mind about Jai. I like the way he has done his job, and I think he's a pretty good guy. [And he loves dogs!] If he ends up suing the town again, it will be hard on Atlanta residents--he really needs to sue the board members!
Since the board wants to go by the letter of the law, the comments should focus on matters of record--like drunk driving charges, etc. Other comments about wives, girlfriends, etc. have no bearing on job performance.
Tell me, did anyone else find it funny when [at the meeting] the deputy told the interested applicant that it wasn't his race that made Jai lose interest in him as a candidate--it was his criminal record. The looks on the board members' faces were priceless!

  16. It seems trouble follows Jai where ever he goes. He was not liked in Sheridan and they couldn't wait for him to leave. His "little big man" attitude got him just what he deserved in Atlanta. How is back to being a wanna be working for you Jai? Good luck finding another job in law enforcement, dipshit, no one wants a lawsuit lovin' dweeb.

  17. i think this drama is in any small town. i live in sullivan in and we go thur the same old stuff... hope all works out.

  18. To "Anonymous" in Sullivan, IN : The only way it will all work out is when King Andy is deposed. I've seen the way he has operated for several years now. I have always thought Robyn looked like an abused wife. Since she left Andy she looks much happier. All those negative comments about Jai make me suspicious. I've never heard anyone speak ill of him unless they've been in trouble with the law.

  19. Jai abused his ex-wife Jennifer! And she wasn't in trouble with the law!

  20. I didn't know Jennifer very well, but she was such a delight. She always said hi to everyone and was always smiling. I remember many days seeing her walk to town hall and bring Jai lunch. My husband said he was a lucky man. One night we were out walking our dog and we heard him screaming at her, it was terrible. I felt so bad, I don't know how she stayed as long as she did. She lost quite a bit of weight and now I know why, it had to have been the stress of living with that cheating monster.

  21. I too noticed that Jai's now ex wife lost alot of weight from the time see came to Atlanta to the time she left. I also witnessed Jai yelling at her in public and heard some yelling come from thier house while I was out walking. I also witnessed her son come out of the house in tears, I asked him if he was ok and he said yes but still looked scared. What do you say when its the chief's stepson (call the police????)Jennifer always seemed very nice to me. She always waved with a smile when she walked or drove by our house. He son was such a sweet boy. I wish they would have stuck around and Jai would have left. They were a nice addition to this town.

  22. Town Board meeting on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. Everyone be there so they won't spring any surprises on us.

  23. Jai Cook did not arrest any memebr of the town hall. Hamilton County officer did. Someone wittnessing a marital dispute in public does not mean that the female is being abused. Couples have arguments, even police officers. I do agree that the Town of Atlanta needs to clean house and get a new council board. The current cheif does not have the authority to carry a weapon or arrest anyone. He is only the cheif because he allows himself to be a pupet to the council. The current reservists do nothing, they only have a badge so they can work at Verizon wireless or other places. The entire situation has gotten out of hand because the current council thinks they are above the law.
